#RAD COFFEE HOW TO#
Matt learned how to roast on a Diedrich and was quite worried about the switch. We landed on a 15 kilo (about 33 lb) roaster that was made in Turkey. There are a lot of great roasters out there, but when you’re just starting out, you’re kind of on a budget. It was tough to navigate starting a business without having tried your end product first, and finding the right roasting equipment was even more difficult. These are the things we knew we could control, and if we were able to achieve these things, we would consider this a success.

We embarked on this journey with two goals in mind: 1) to roast quality coffee and 2) to enjoy the time we could spend together as a family. Our family has lived in this area for many years (mostly in Covington). We decided to move toward improving the coffee quality of this area. We realized that in South King County, there was a lack of quality roasters. At every meeting, we walked away thinking that the coffee should have been better. At this point, Matt had worked in the coffee industry for about 10 years: roasting, managing, training, delivering and spending many years as a barista. We are a small, family-owned and operated coffee roasting company, located in Kent Washington, established in 2010! In 2009, our family kept trying to meet up at coffee shops in South King County to talk about what kind of business we were interested in starting.
